In an article entitled “Telemedicine Study Cites Tele-ICU’s Positive Impact on Patients”, mHealthIntelligence drew from two recent studies to report on the growing body of evidence supporting the effectiveness and efficiency of tele-ICU.
Citing a presentation by Advanced ICU Care’s Dellice Dickhaus, MD, FCCP at the Society of Critical Care Medicine’s 46th Critical Care Congress this week, the article cited analysis conducted across the 17 hospitals of a specific health system. In the hospitals studied, tele-ICU reduced the average ICU patients stay by one-third, saved more than 26,000 ICU days, and extended the lives of 390 people (all measured against acuity-adjusted outcome projections).
The article also noted a recent study comparing a traditional ICU with a tele-ICU. Drawing from the report primarily authored by Craig M. Lilly, MD and to be published in CHEST in February, the article highlighted a key finding that tele-ICU services can save millions of dollars and recoup a hospital’s tele-ICU implementation costs within months.
