Silverman Joins Emanuel, CEOs in Discussing Future of Healthcare

Advanced ICU Care Chairman and CEO Lou Silverman shared his thoughts on The Future of Healthcare in a symposium sponsored by the Pepperdine Graziadio School of Business and Management. The third annual conference featured a keynote on Transforming the American Health System Towards Value-Based Care by doctor and author Ezekiel Emanuel, formerly Special Advisor for Health Policy in the Obama administration.

Silverman participated in a panel entitled Advances in Telemedicine for the 21st Century. Joined on the panel by executives from Doctor on Demand and Genoa Telepsychiatry, Silverman highlighted how tele-ICU works and how clinical-to-clinical telemedicine differs from consumer-oriented telehealth, drawing upon Advanced ICU Care’s experience over the past decade. He noted that Advanced ICU Care’s services are contracted directly with a hospital to the benefit of its critically ill patients, their families, and the physicians and nurses in the hospital. Silverman highlighted the proven benefits of tele-ICU to these constituents, including reducing mortality rates by 30-40% and ICU length of stay by 25-30% while delivering a 2-6X ROI to partner hospitals.

“One of the things we’ve learned is that there is a client service ecosystem that is really important to keep the integrity of the clinical service working,” Silverman highlighted. “Having that infrastructure and ecosystem, while somewhat hidden from plain view, is really important in allowing telemedicine to continue to march forward.” Silverman also highlighted his belief in “relentless incrementalism” in achieving progress, preparing for and driving “big bang innovations” while not waiting for them as the only means forward.
